Beijing Wall of China Tour: Discover the History of the Great Wall

Spanning over 13,000 miles, the Great Wall of China was originally constructed to protect Chinese states and empires from invasions by nomadic tribes and military incursions. It's not a single continuous wall, but rather a series of walls and fortifications that were built and rebuilt over various dynasties, including the Qin, Han, and Ming Dynasties. The Wall was not only a military defense mechanism but also a symbol of China's resilience and unity.

The Best Sections of the Great Wall to Visit

Walking along the Wall, you'll feel like you're stepping into another era. The blend of breathtaking scenery, ancient stonework, and incredible history makes for an unforgettable journey.

While the Great Wall of China stretches across a vast expanse, some sections are more accessible and visitor-friendly than others. Each section has its own personality, offering different views, experiences, and levels of difficulty. Here are some of the top sections to consider when planning your Great Wall of China tours.

Mutianyu Great Wall: A Blend of Beauty and Accessibility

If you're looking for a perfect balance between history, scenic beauty, and convenience, Mutianyu is one of the best sections to visit. Located just 45 minutes outside of Beijing, Mutianyu offers both wild areas and a well-preserved stretch of the Wall that has been restored for modern visitors.

One of the highlights of Mutianyu Great Wall is the cable car ride that takes you to the top of the Wall, offering stunning panoramic views as you ascend. From the top, you'll have the chance to walk along the Wall, admiring its towering watchtowers, steep ascents, and incredible views of the surrounding countryside.

Badaling Great Wall: The Most Famous Section

If you've ever seen a photo of the Great Wall, chances are it was taken at Badaling. Located about an hour's drive from Beijing, this section is the most famous and the most visited. Badaling has been heavily restored to accommodate the large number of tourists that flock here every year.

Though Badaling can get crowded, it's still highly recommended for first-time visitors, as it offers the most accessible and comprehensive experience. You'll find plenty of restaurants, souvenir shops, and facilities at the base, making it a family-friendly destination.

Jinshanling Great Wall: The Hike for Adventurers

For travelers looking for a more rugged, adventurous experience, the Jinshanling section is the place to go. Located about two and a half hours from Beijing, this section is less restored than Badaling and Mutianyu, offering a more authentic and wild feel. The Jinshanling to Simatai hike is particularly popular among visitors who want to experience a bit of both — the more untouched, original sections of the Wall and the more accessible, restored areas.

Hiking this stretch offers fantastic views of the Wall winding across the ridgelines, and there are fewer crowds, making it perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the more popular sections. A Great Wall of China private tour would be most suitable for those seeking a guided off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Simatai Great Wall: Scenic and Striking

Simatai is one of the most dramatic and scenic sections of the Wall. Known for its steep climbs and breathtaking vistas, it’s located northeast of Beijing. What sets Simatai apart is its picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and its more rugged, authentic feel. The Simatai Great Wall tour is ideal for those who enjoy both history and nature, offering a more tranquil experience than Badaling.

Simatai is also famous for its night tours, where visitors can marvel at the Wall illuminated against the night sky. If you'd like, request a custom Great Wall of China tour that includes Simatai, you’ll be treated to one of the most photogenic views of the Wall, as it stretches dramatically across the mountain peaks.

We booked the 14 days luxury trip for family vacation, and we really enjoyed this trip with Panda Tourism. Beijing and Xi'an were just amazing to see into history and ancient China's way of life. And we love the vibes of Guilin and Yangshuo, we had a wonderful time cycling and boating there. The local staff ensured that every detail was perfect. Guides were professional. The hotels were great quality. They were able to be accommodating to our food preferences for most meals. This was by far one of the most enjoyable and stress-free vacations we've had. I highly recommended.

My wife really wanted to visit China so took her there after thanksgiving. I didn’t know what to expect when booking this trip, but wow, China totally blew me away. The country isn't what I imagined at all.... It's so modern like 2050??!! The cities themselves is plenty to see, but if you go to the sights, you MUST see Terracotta warriors!! The organization from Panda Tourism was all so smooth. They seem to have lots of exeperience doing this stuff. The guides, Chris, Lily, Ling were all super chill and easy to talk to. We wanted a more relaxed and slow paced tour, so our tour planning person gave us some free time for us to wander around Shanghai and soak in the vibe. Still can't get over the xiaolongbaos. Officially my fave city in Asia now. Couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Thank you!
